Nambung National Park is about three hours drive north of Perth in Western Australia. It's most well known feature is the popular Pinnacles Desert environment that occupies a relatively small section of the park. It is very accessible and has an un-surfaced one-way loop road running through it. It is only fifteen minutes drive from the seaside town of Cervantes so access to accommodation near the park is easy. On my most recent visit I brought my swag.....
Read MoreKenya Trip Report Part Two (Lions)
The Masai Mara is well known for its lions and when I was there we saw plenty. It would be exaggerating to say they were in plague proportions but after about four days we were feeling quite satisfied with the number of lion pixels on our memory cards and were hankering to see some of the other large Mara cats instead. (As it turned out we were lucky enough to experience some incredible cheetah sightings in the last three days.) There were some chances.....

Hearing the words 'Tanzania' or 'The Serengeti' or 'The Masai Mara' or 'Ngorongoro Crater' has always conjured up images in my mind from the books I have read or the countless nature documentaries I've seen. Sweeping plains, harsh sun, lions, wildebeest stampedes. Herds of zebra, elephants, Masai warriors, hyena's. Essentially east Africa is a photographers dream.....
Read MoreLocations: Sugarloaf Rock
Landscape photography can be a challenging pastime. Poor light, unsocial hours, weather and distance all conspire to discourage the photographer. In my experience there are three main ingredients to getting amazing images of great locations. They are (in order of importance) a. be there b. be there at the right time c. use a tripod. Notably absent in this list is anything to do with cameras or.....
Read MoreBotswana Video Project
The moving image is not my usual stock in trade. I have never had much interest in video in the past and wasn't particularly happy with the quality I got from my JVC Everio camcorder when I had it. The new generation of DSLR's though have some serious video capability built in. Even video amateurs like myself can be tempted to have a bash at some 'pro' level video and owning a Canon 5D Mk2 (which.....
Read MoreExpecting The Unexpected
When in Africa it is good to expect the unexpected. Wildlife is unpredicatable at the best of times which makes photographing them something of a challenge. You can bump around in the safari vehicle for hours without seeing anything much. You can wait fruitlessly beside sleeping lions waiting for them to stir from their regal slumber and do.....
Read MoreBotswana Birding Experience - The Heronry.
During my trip to Botswana I experienced many different photography environments. One of these was photographing water birds from boats in the legendary water channels and lakes of the Okavango Delta. We visited a herony - a place where herons and other waterbirds come year after year to nest and raise young. The main species present were Maribou storks, yellow-billed storks, cattle egrets and african ibis but there were also smaller and less common birds. There were a lot of juveniles.....
Read MoreWhale Watching In Ucluelet Canada
Towards the end of my recent three week family holiday in Canada I spent a few days in the beautiful fishing village of Ucluelet. Ucluelet is situated on the west coast of Vancouver Island a few hours drive from Victoria and is well known as a hot spot for those wanting to see whales and other wildlife such as bears.and bald eagles. It is a sleepy little place but beautiful and gives a good taste of the Pacific Rim.....
Read MoreLocations: Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains are an icon amongst Australian landscape destinations. Named for the blueish haze you can see in the valleys from all the eucalyptus oil evaporating from leaves and mixing with the air, they provide wonderful opportunities for photography. From the numerous lookouts where you can capture the valley views to the steep walks into gorges and gullies, wet with water dripping down from the cliff faces and never far from a waterfall or two. I spent 4 days in Blackheath which is only a few.....

ust an amusing series of pics showing an egret striking for a fish. It missed unfortunately so I can't show you the catch! Water birds are a common sight in the Okavango Delta particularly in the wetter summer months when water tends to flood larger area's of temporary swampland.
